1867 Settlement

About This Project

Located in present-day west Texas City, the 1867 Settlement is an African-American community that emerged during the period of Reconstruction following the Civil War. The founding families of the community, unlike many freed slaves, were landowners and eventually formed a thriving, self-sufficient community of African-Americans. This exhibit features historical images, biographical sketches for the Calvin Bell, Kneeland Britton, Thomas Caldwell, and David Hobgood families, and information about current preservation efforts.
